Question: Kalina, you have lived in Burgas since your childhood. What does the city mean to you today?
Kalina: Burgas is my anchor. In the past, I thought I had to go to Sofia or abroad to “make something of myself.” Today I know: here by the sea, one breathes more freely, and there are now so many creative niches that I can develop both professionally and personally.
Question: You work in the digital industry. How digital is Burgas really?
Kalina: Quite advanced! Since the pandemic, many of us have learned to work remotely. I develop user interfaces for an app in Berlin – all from my favorite café near the Meeresgarten. There are good internet connections, co-working spaces like SmartHub, and many young people with innovative ideas.
Question: What do you think are the biggest changes in the city?
Kalina: The self-confidence! In the past, Burgas was rather sleepy; today, it is awake. There are start-ups, sustainable tourism initiatives, and numerous cultural events. The city attracts new people – Bulgarians from abroad, but also creatives from other countries.
Question: What do you wish for the future of Burgas?
Kalina: I hope that change does not come at the expense of nature. We have incredible natural treasures – from Lake Atanasovsko to the Poda area. If we protect these and stay open to new ideas, Burgas has a bright future.
